No long-term deal expected for Lamarcus Joyner before deadline

The Rams and safety Lamarcus Joyner will continue their talks Monday, but they are not expected to reach a long-term deal before the 4 p.m. ET deadline, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Joyner will make $11.287 million this year, and he’ll become a free agent in March if he doesn’t work out a new contract with the Rams. If the Rams were to franchise Joyner again next year, they would have to pay him $13.544 million in 2019.

Joyner, 27, previously has said he’s in a good place with the franchise tag.

Besides, the Cowboys almost always get long-term deals done with players they want to keep, and they want to keep Lawrence. They recently made Zack Martin the highest-paid guard in NFL history, signing him to a six-year, $84 million extension that includes $40 million guaranteed.

So that’s really most of what was happening in the NFL last week, with the majority of coaches, scouts and football executives taking off for their pre-training camp vacations. You might have seen some of the rookie programs on social media. The Redskins and Ravens rookies went to Top Golf together. The Niners rookies did work at a Habitat for Humanity site. The Cowboys rookies went to Six Flags. The Titans toured Nashville.

And the Rams went through a comprehensive few days after the vets broke for summer, part of a month-long process the team runs for its rookies. A lot of it goes back to when the team was in St. Louis and Jeff Fisher was coach. The foundation is a financial literacy program every rookie has to complete before signing his first contract and getting his first check, a piece that tends to make an immediate impact on guys.

Mississippi State’s starting quarterback can joke now, and he joked then, too, when his right foot dangled off the end of his leg on Thanksgiving night. Rusty Linton remembers because he was there. He’s the one who, upon arriving to a writhing 21-year old, immediately slid Fitzgerald’s foot back onto his leg, essentially locating a dislocated ankle and inciting humor from his patient.

Pick me up and let me go back and play, Fitzgerald told trainers.

The Spurs should play God with the Lakers.

LeBron James turns 34 in December. What he’s doing as an NBA superstar, from a career minutes perspective, is already unprecedented. That he’ll remain at this level beyond 2018-19 is no given. So the time for L.A. is now. And RC Buford and Gregg Popovich should deal with Magic Johnson and company accordingly. Hold the Lakers at gunpoint. If they want Kawhi Leonard, the Spurs need to make it hurt.

And that was just his true freshman season. It didn’t seem to matter that late-year opponents knew BC would operate through Dillon. At 6’0, 245 pounds, he has proven that he can do whatever he wants once the ball is in his hands. (And with no receptions all year, it’s on both Dillon and the Eagles’ offensive staff to diversify how he gets the ball in his hands as a sophomore.)

Many people don’t know that Rashad was a football star in college, perhaps because he was called Bobby Moore until he followed Ali and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and changed his name in 1973 after converting to Islam. As Bobby Moore, he was an All-America running back his senior year at Oregon and was then picked fourth overall in the ’72 NFL draft by the St. Louis Cardinals, who used him as a wideout. He played in the NFL for 10 years and made four Pro Bowls with the Vikings as Ahmad Rashad. He’s in both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Vikings Ring of Honor. He was clearly the best player on our team, and one of the greatest players Oregon’s ever had, says Hall of Fame QB Dan Fouts, Rashad’s college teammate.

It was in Eugene that Rashad made one of his first famous connections. Jack Nicholson came to campus to direct his first film, Drive, He Said, a movie about a star athlete’s sex life, and someone introduced him to Rashad. He’s a big sports fan, I was The Guy on campus, and we just hit it off, Rashad says. When Nicholson wasn’t working, he would hang out at Rashad’s apartment. He followed Rashad’s career after that, sending him notes or calling him after games.

Add to that Josh Gordon, Jarvis Landry, Corey Coleman and David Njoku, and it’s plain to see that at least one or two of these fantasy-relevant players will get squeezed once the season begins. Despite that, Chubb’s early-eighth-round ADP has him coming off the board in the same neighborhood as Emmanuel Sanders, Tarik Cohen, C.J. Anderson and Marquise Goodwin. That’s a steep price to pay given the team context.

For my money, Jones sits in third in the potential workhorse rankings among rookies, behind Barkley and Penny. The next three running backs on the depth chart in Tampa are Jacquizz Rodgers, Charles Sims and Peyton Barber, all of whom are largely known commodities with obvious flaws. Sims may eat into Jones’ receiving upside, but the rookie out of USC is clearly the only back here with hope of handling a starter’s workload. He was great in what turned out to be his final season with the Trojans, racking up 1,550 yards on 261 carries and 20 total touchdowns. He’s a potentially electric player with home-run ability who never missed a game at USC due to injury. Jones has a safe floor, identifiable upside, and he doesn’t cost too much, coming off the board in the middle of the fifth round in typical 12-team drafts.

Eli Manning can’t stop staring at Saquon Barkley’s massive legs

Giants rookie running back Saquon Barkley has massive legs.

Eli Manning admitted during an interview on Bleacher Report’s Simms and Lefkoe podcast that he can’t stop looking at them.

How reliable is CompuBox in its portrait of Muhammad Ali and today?

His quads are the size of my waist and whole upper body, Manning said. I’ve never quite seen anything like it. I don’t often stare at another man’s legs, but in that case, you just can’t quite help it.

LeSean McCoy has found himself at the center of another off-field debacle.

There’s a case that sports generally are tilting more toward high-variance strategies. The fly ball, for instance, is a high-variance offensive weapon: Fly balls that stay in the yard are more likely than any other ball to be turned into an out, but fly balls that clear the wall are the most valuable act in the sport. The margin between the two can be impossibly thin over the course of a single game. Two teams might play identically, but one could outscore the other by six on a couple of big flies alone. In basketball, 3-pointers are a high-variance strategy, as is a pass-heavy offense in football. The analytics support these strategies, but when they fail, as they inevitably will at times, a good team looks temporarily awful.

Tepper’s remarks came after his final question, allowing no time for a follow-up.

The international neutral site games are now an ingrained part of the schedule, with preseason games in Europe and Asia as well as some regular-season games, including in Sweden and Finland next season. The domestic neutral site games are played in the preseason.

On the expansion front, it’s no coincidence that five of the 13 cities that hosted neutral site games in 1992-94 eventually received NHL franchises: Miami, Atlanta and Minneapolis through expansion; Dallas and Phoenix through relocation. The experiment in some ways was a trial balloon. The other cities included Milwaukee, Cleveland, Sacramento, Oklahoma City, Providence, Peoria (!), Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Their balloons popped, for various reasons.

So why would things be different this time?

J.T. O’Sullivan to the Pro Bowl. The 49ers’ dysfunction certainly didn’t start with the firing of Jim Harbaugh.

Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson is set to jump into Lake Erie Friday, fulfilling a promise he made after predicting that his team would not go 1-15 again in 2017. Instead, they went 0-16, so he’s taking his lumps.

Maybe you thought the Browns were good for two wins in 2017. Or maybe you, like our own James Brady, noted football expert, thought in 2008 that quarterback J.T O’Sullivan was going to be a Pro Bowler under Mike Martz for the San Francisco 49ers.

At the time of his eventual benching halfway through the season, O’Sullivan and Brett Favre were tied for the league lead in interceptions (11), while O’Sullivan also led the league in fumbles (11). He was responsible for more turnovers at the time of his benching than any single NFL team. He was also sacked 32 times in just eight games. I will never give myself a pass for this. — James Brady

It is Game 7 of the 2010 Stanley Cup Final. The Bruins, once up in the series 3-0, are now staring a horrific collapse in the face.

Expectations for 2018: As of now, Sam Bradford is the starter at quarterback for the Cardinals, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Rosen starts a game at some point this season, especially considering Bradford’s injury history. If the Cardinals get off to a shaky start with Bradford, a switch at the position could come fairly fast.

Spring report: Lamar Jackson has been receiving lots of attention since his arrival in Baltimore and Robert Griffin III has taken the rookie under his wings. Flacco served as the team’s No. 1 quarterback for all of OTAs and minicamp, until the closing day of spring practices when the Ravens let Jackson take over.

Just putting him out there today, putting the pressure on him to have him run the whole practice, operate the offense was valuable, John Harbaugh told the Baltimore Sun.

Flacco definitely has some added pressure with Jackson thriving and it comes after three subpar seasons for the Ravens.

Expectations for 2018: Will Jackson start in 2018? Probably not as the Ravens continue to lean on Flacco. Jackson is the future for the Ravens though and he could make his way onto the field in 2018 if the team follows through with the two-QB sets they’ve been experimenting with at practice. Baltimore Beatdown has some more ideas for ways Jackson could be used this season, too.

Maybe John Elway comes back on the field and puts together another drive to wreck the soul of Cleveland, anyway.

So you’ve got the winningest quarterback in league history and a wide receiver who can do everything except be tall. Brady is the guy who turned guys like David Patten and David Givens into multi-millionaires and turned Chris Hogan from Bills’ afterthought to the league’s yards-per-catch leader in a single season. When he had Moss, he piloted the greatest scoring offense the NFL had ever seen. Give him Brown and watch the fireworks. — Christian D’Andrea

We’ve all daydreamed about it. That one day, we wake up and suddenly we have superpowers, through a radioactive accident or dormant mutation becoming active or whatever. The details aren’t that important. All that matters is we have superpowers, and not just any superpowers. We now have the ability to change the past — but only for sports (this is our fantasy and we don’t want to think about baby Hitler, OK?).

Every fan of every team in every sport has at least one moment they wish they had turned out differently. The NFL has countless examples.

I don’t actually remember this play or have any strong feelings about the Broncos or Browns. But I do love two things: revenge and long-suffering teams breaking sports curses.

We’re becoming an MVP, Hall of Fame society and that misses the point of team sports, Toomer said. I don’t understand the Hall of Fame in their need for writers to validate players’ careers, people who have never played the game. It plays into the athletes’ insecurities, for those athlete who are always looking for validation that they are good. I applaud T.O. for standing up. That is the ultimate great player taking his power back and not letting these people be the judge. I don’t know if I would do it that way. But love him or hate him, you got to respect that. I think the players respect him differently.

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis coached Owens in 2010, the receiver’s final NFL season. Lewis remembers Owens enjoying a big year until injuries slowed him.

As great a player you saw from afar he was even better in person, just scary, Lewis said. He was big and physical at a time when there were not a lot of guys like that like there are now; he probably helped set the standard for that. Starting in San Francisco and being around Jerry Rice helped him set a foundation as a player. T.O. had a following. He has an aura that brought people to see him.

NBA Draft 2018: Suns select Deandre Ayton No. 1 overall

Deandre Ayton told everyone he was going to be the first pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, and he was right.

The Phoenix Suns stayed in state Thursday, taking the Arizona center No. 1 overall to team with Devin Booker, Elfrid Payton, Dragan Bender and Josh Jackson. A college freshman has now been selected No. 1 overall in nine straight drafts. The last non-freshman drafted first overall was Blake Griffin in 2009.

Ayton told reporters earlier this month after working out with the Suns that he would not workout for any other teams because he knew he was going to be selected by Phoenix.

Recent reports suggest Bagley will likely be the pick. The 19-year-old prospect faces positional and defensive questions, but he was one of the most productive players in college basketball last season. He would immediately become Sacramento’s best frontcourt prospect.

Real Madrid’s Luka Doncic also remains as an option despite reports general manager Vlade Divac isn’t a fan. Divac, owner Vivek Ranadive and others met with Doncic in Spain earlier this month. There’s a chance Divac and the rest of the Kings’ front office are pulling off an impressive rope-a-dope strategy here by spreading disinformation regarding their feelings for Doncic.

The Hockey Hall of Fame selection committee hasn’t lacked for baffling decisions in the Builders category, like the interminable waits for Fred Shero, Pat Burns and Willie O’Ree in comparison to the vote-rigged (and subsequently scuttled) election of NHL president Gil Stein. Their selection of Gary Bettman for the Class of 2018 surprised even the commissioner himself, not to mention legions of NHL fans who found the decision to be abhorrent.

There have been two general reactions to the news. One of them is reasonable, and one of them is ignorant of the facts.

Let’s start, as is our wont, with the ignorance. Gary Bettman is a Hall of Famer, full stop. I chronicled his case in my look at the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Bettman during the 25th anniversary of his commissionership. The Builders are selected for contributions to his or her organization or organizations and to the game of hockey in general. With Bettman at the helm, the NHL grew exponentially in size, in scope and in revenue (as his job dictates).

Draft Night fashion inspired by Black Panther!

The second overall pick (to the Kings) pulled off a sleek and shiny look.

Gilgeous-Alexander, along with Young, had perhaps the most distinctive look of the draft with a white floral suit.

The Hawks may try and deal starting point guard Dennis Schroder to the Clippers for the No. 13 pick, according to a report from Atlanta TV station WSB.

If the Hawks do end up drafting Trae Young… look for them to work out a deal and try to package Dennis Schroder to the LA Clippers at #13

The potential trade between Dallas and Atlanta had been losing momentum prior to the draft, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.

Brian Anderson hit a two-run homer off Jacob deGrom and the Marlins climbed out of last place in the NL East by rallying past the reeling Mets, 5-2.

Shields still isn’t the pitcher that won 13 or more games seven times from 2008 to 2015, but it hasn’t helped that he’s pitching for a team that’s off to the second worst start in franchise history. He has allowed a respectable six earned runs in his last four starts, and twice yielded one or no runs while lasting at least seven innings.

At age 36, Shields is making adjustments to compensate for his decreased velocity, yet has pitched at least six innings in 12 of his last 13 starts for a last-place team.

My body’s feeling really good this year, and this is kind of what I’ve done my whole career, Shields told reporters after the game against the Twins. I strive to go as deep as I possibly can in games and so far it’s been good.
